Introducing the HEM27 and the HEM27EC, iOptron’s revolutionary hybrid strain wave drive mounts. These light weight, high payload tiny titans will deliver an astronomy experience like never before. Imagine a mount head weighing in at 8.15lbs with a payload capability 29.74lbs, without needing a cumbersome counterweight or shaft. Applying iOptron’s multi decade experience creating precision mounts, the HEM27 brings this vision to reality.

Utilizing state of the art strain wave drive technology for the RA movement in tandem with backlash-free DEC worm/belt drive design, the HEM27s deliver unparalleled weight to payload efficiency. Its black anodized all metal CNC machined body is not only appealing to the eye, it’s a rugged platform that will perform at the highest level for many years to come. Unique features include an electronic friction break to safely stop movement during a planned or unplanned power interruption.

A HEM27 mount can be controlled by a computer, either via ASCOM/Commander for a Windows PC or a third party INDI driver for a MacOS software; a SmartPhone/Tablet via iOptron Commander Lite or an App like SkySafari; or a Raspberry Pi device via INDI driver.

The HEM27EC features a high precision RA axis encoder that delivers incredible tracking accuracy, enough that many will choose to image “sans” guiding.

5 of 5 HEM27 Initial Review August 12, 2022
Reviewer: Ed Dixon from Roanoke, VA United States
I’ve had my HEM27 for a week or so now and it’s been great!  I also got the carbon fiber tripod and the combo is so much easier to work with than much heavier mounts.  The slew rate is very fast and it seems totally stable with no counter weight.  My current configuration is a WO GT71, ASI294MC Pro, ZWO guide scope, and ZWO EAF focuser, which weighs in at about 11 lb.

I got the version with the integrated iPolar camera which also works great.  A big plus for me for the HEM27 is the lighter weight with 13 lb for both tripod and mount.

Cable management is easier with both 12V and USB outputs on the DEC head portion.  I just use a short cable from DEC to camera.  The same is true for camera connection with a short USB cable from DEC to camera.

Tracking seems rock solid using PHD2 and my ASI120mm-S camera and ZWO guide scope.  The software interface works well with a variety of computer based packages.  So far I have used ZWO ASICAP, N.I.N.A, Sharpcap pro, and Stellarium.
